Beaufort festival celebrates shrimp!

It's time to get involved with the year's celebration of fresh local shrimp. The Tenth Annual Beaufort Shrimp Festival is set for Oct. 7-9. Registration is open for the golf tournament, the Walk through History, 5K Run, Popcorn Shrimp Run and for restaurant and vendor participation.

The festival kick-off party features the movie Forrest Gump, sponsored by and shown at Highway 21 Drive-In and Open Air Market. It's free and open to the public. The film, partially shot in Beaufort was the inspiration for the first festival.

The golf tournament, sponsored by AFLAC, will be Oct. 8 at South Carolina National with a shotgun start at 1 pm. A foursome can play for $350, or individual golfers for $100 each. The Nineteenth Hole is sponsored by Miller Lite. Awards presentations will follow the tournament at a Lowcountry boil supper sponsored by Miller Lite and Adventures in Advertising. Hole sponsorships are available.

Free entertainment in Waterfront Park will be by The Cigar Store Indians Friday at 7 p.m. Fresh local shrimp and fried and boiled shrimp dinners will be available for purchase from the S.C. Shrimpers Association beginning at 5 p.m. The 5K Run and Walk begin at 8 a.m. Oct. 9 at Bay and Newcastle streets. Registration fees for the 5K Run are $20 in advance and $25 the day of the event. Mardale Imaging Solutions, Craft Built Homes, the Beaufort Gazette, Carolina Morning News, MCAS Beaufort Federal Credit Union and Spectrum Graphics sponsor the run.

Registration fees for the Walk through History are $10 in advance and $15 the day of the event. Seacoast Synergy and SC Education Lottery sponsor the walk. The Popcorn Shrimp Run, for ages 7 and under, registration $5, begins at 8:45 a.m., also at Bay and Newcastle streets. ISLC, Sea Island Pediatrics, Hobbit Hill Too and Lady's Island Medical Associates sponsor it.

Saturday's events continue at 11 a.m. in Waterfront Park with live music, arts and craft vendors and a celebration of shrimp provided by 15 local restaurants. Food purchase price begin at $1. Live entertainment, activities for children and the Blessing of the Fleet take place during the afternoon.

A new event this year is the Forrest Gump movie character look-alike contest. It's free, but advance registration is required.

The festival concludes with a free concert by Deanna Bogart at 7:30 p.m., plus more fresh local shrimp dinners available for purchase beginning at 5 p.m.

Hargray, the South Carolina Shrimpers Association and the Greater Beaufort Chamber of Commerce sponsor the festival.

Additional weekend events Oct. 10 are FrippFest - with a 10K run sponsored by Fripp Island Resort and a shrimp cooking contest at Bateaux at Whitehall Landing.
