Genealogy, Internet and computer workshops offered

HILTON HEAD -- The second Monday of both October and November the Heritage Library will offer free introductory workshops for the beginning genealogist. The first will be held Oct. 11 from 9:30-11:30 a.m.

"What to expect from researching at Internet sites" for intermediate researchers will be offered Oct. 19 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. A $15 fee is required.

"Record keeping using the computer -- Family Tree Maker and other genealogy software programs" will be offered Oct. 27 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. A fee of $15 is required.

All workshops will be held in the Reading room of the Heritage Library, Suite 300 of the Courtyard Building, just outside the Greenwood Gate to Sea Pines.

Wine tasting and sale

HONEY HORN PLANTATION -- Oct.16, the Coastal Discovery Museum will host Winetime III at historic Honey Horn from 1-4 p.m. More than 300 fine wines will be available for sampling and purchase, representing 70 different wineries. Wines purchased at the sale will be at warehouse prices, with the pick-up of purchases arranged for Oct. 23 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at Honey Horn. The cost of $25 per adult ($20 for museum members) allows you to sample wines and purchase. All proceeds support the Coastal Discovery Museum. Picnic food will be available for sale.

Community Festival

HONEY HORN PLANTATION -- The Coastal Discovery Museum Community Festival will be held at Honey Horn Oct. 22 and Oct. 23, from 5:30-9:30 p.m. An evening of genuine family fun is what the Annual Coastal Discovery Museum's Annual Community Festival is all about! The festival will feature a trail through the haunted forest put on by the Hilton Head Rotary Club, inflatable rides and games.

Hungry? Hamburgers and hot dogs (cooked by our own Fire Department) beer, wine and soft drinks will be available. The Beaufort County Sheriff's Department will be on hand with the Ident-A-Kid program, the K-9 unit, a crime safety house, a motorcycle and Camaro. A pumpkin carving contest will be held for children of all ages. Many businesses in the community will host activities with games and giveaways for the children.

Admission to the festival is $10 per vehicle and you will receive $5 worth of tickets for food and activities. Admission for museum members is free, with individual tickets available for purchase of food, beverages and activities.

Literacy Volunteers Tutor Training

HILTON HEAD ISLAND - Thousands of adults in Beaufort County can't read, write or speak English. Find out how you can help by attending Literacy Volunteers' orientation Oct. 6 from 5-7 p.m. at LVL's Wexford office, 9 Town Center Court, Hilton Head.

Volunteer training will take place on four consecutive days, Oct. 11-14 from 4-7 p.m., at the Wexford Office. All sessions are required and will certify you to tutor English for speakers of other languages and basic literacy.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR BLOOD CENTER

BEAUFORT - Lowcountry Community Blood Center, is seeking part-time volunteers to assist with donor recruitment for community blood drives.

At least two volunteers are needed to work one day per week, for a few hours each day. Volunteers will work in their own office, located in the pathology department at Beaufort Memorial Hospital. Training will be provided. Days and hours are flexible.

SAVANNAH - The Savannah Chapter of the National Association for the Mentally Ill meets from 4-6 p.m. the third Sunday of each month in room 226 of the Armstrong Atlantic Southern University Sports Education Building. SAVANNAH - The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program is in need of volunteers to share their time and talents giving back to the communities. CASA needs volunteers to advocate for abused children

SAVANNAH - Every child should have a safe, loving, and permanent home, but many do not. Each year hundreds of children in Chatham County are abused and neglected by those who are supposed to care for them. The Savannah/Chatham County Court Appointed Special Advocates program is a catalyst for change, but they need your help. Hilton Head Aquatics Club Masters Swim Team seeks swimmers

HILTON HEAD ISLAND - If you are interested in joining the team your first week is free. An experienced coach will help with stroke technique and conditioning for all levels of swimmers. Oktoberfest

PORT ROYAL --The Old Village Association of Port Royal will host its second annual Oktoberfest Festival from noon-5 p.m. Oct. 23 on Paris Avenue in the Old Village of Port Royal.

The festival includes live entertainment by the Rhinelanders with traditional Oktoberfest music at the Old Village Association's Beer Garden from 1-4 p.m. The YMCA of Port Royal is sponsoring and hosting activities and games for children of all ages. Other activities include a classic car and truck show and a dog walk sponsored by the Humane Society. A special book signing will be at A Lil Peace of Heaven teahouse and local artists will exhibit at the Union Church. Traditional Oktoberfest foods and drinks, beer and bratwurst, hot dogs and other food specialties will be prepared by local restaurants and the Old Village Association.

Art and craft exhibitors are welcome. The festival is free and the public is invited. Tickets may be purchased for food and beverage items.

Skidaway Island Marine Science Campus

SAVANNAH -- You may know it's there, but do you know everything that's involved about this Savannah science complex? You can learn more at an open house, Oct. 16, noon-5 p.m., sponsored by the University of Georgia Marine Education Center & Aquarium, Skidaway Institute of Oceanography, Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary and FM 91, GA Public Radio.

Visitors will get a behind the scenes aquarium tour, lab tours, view video programs, take in the annual photography exhibit, walk a guided nature trail tour, tour the research vessel "Sea Dawg," and, just for the kids, participate in cool art activities.

There will be lectures, lab tours, a tour of research vessel "Savannah," and more activities for kids.

The Gray's Reef staff will demonstrate a remote operating vehicle and present exhibits about the environment of Gray's Reef.

The staff of FM 91, will provide a behind the scenes look at radio broadcasting.

Hospice Thrift Shop

HILTON HEAD -- Hospice Care of the Lowcountry, a nonprofit organization, has opened a thrift shop in buildings 3 and 4 in Mathew's Court, across from Port Royal Plaza and Sam's Club, on Mathews Drive.

The new shop is called Hospice Community Thrift and is open from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday., Wed. and Fri., and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sat. Hospice Care of the Lowcountry and other nonprofit charities in the Hilton Head Island and Bluffton areas will receive the proceeds.

BLUFFTON - The Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Support Group 2, affiliated with the Alzheimer's Association Palmetto Chapter, has added an Early Onset/Recent Diagnosis Support Group that also includes those recently symptomatic with Alzheimer's disease, related disorders, stroke and Parkinson's disease.
