The Learning Exchange hosts Community Outreach Lecture Series

More courses and programs means more opportunities for personal development

The Learning Exchange of the University of South Carolina Beaufort has unveiled more than 50 courses in the term beginning in October. For residents in Beaufort, Hilton Head and New River, the fall curriculum promises information, insights, and skills that address national and international issues, history and business, the unique features of the coastal environment as well as an array of personal interests, hobbies and crafts.

This year marks several important milestones in The Learning Exchange USCB program.

  • The Learning Exchange hosts its third annual Community Outreach Lecture Series, "Setting America's Course in the World." This six-part lecture series will address the challenges facing the United States as we pursue our strategic, political and economic interests abroad. Seven distinguished visiting guest lecturers will address these and other issues.

  • The Great Books study group, one of the longest running and most popular courses since the founding of the Learning Exchange (formerly Creative Retirement Center) 12 years ago, will be joined this semester by Great Decisions, a new program. Developed by the Foreign Policy Association, Great Decisions is a study course that takes an in-depth look at international issues. It will be offered at all three locations: Beaufort, Hilton Head and New River.

  • Newcomers to the Lowcountry as well as long-time residents will find a wide array of informative and entertaining life-style courses in the 2004 curriculum. This year's program is especially diverse, offering insights on personal pursuits and interests that range from salt-water fishing, plantation life, and the influence of Gullah heritage to the art and technique of landscaping environmentally.
The Learning Exchange encourages new members to join at any time. For Lowcountry residents interested in the Community Outreach Series, "Setting America's Course in the World," purchase of tickets for the series or for individual lectures should be done as soon as possible. The Learning Exchange academic term begins Oct. 11 and runs through Nov. 19. Course length varies. Most are six weeks.
