Holiday decorating show hosted by garden club

The Windsor forest Garden Club will hold its annual "Holiday Decorating Savannah Style" flower arrangement show Oct. 26 in White Bluff United Methodist Church Horton Hall from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Lunch is included in the $17 price.

Demonstrations will be provided by John Davis of Flower and Balloon Fair, Dyanna Byers, past president of the Savannah Council of Garden Clubs, and Tina Kiger, artist and club arranger.

Choral ensemble performing tunes of the British Isles

"I Canton," Savannah's premier choral ensemble, will kick off its eleventh season with a concert Oct. l4, 7 p.m. at Skidaway Island Methodist Church. The theme of the performance is "Folk Songs of the British Isles," and will feature such well-known works as "Annie Laurie," "Drink To Me Only With Thine Eyes," "Johnny, 1 Hardly Knew Ye," and All Through The Night."

Of special interest will be the arrangement of Scottish poet Robert Burns' "Ye Banks and Braes" and the rowdy Irish folksong, "The Star Of County Down."

Conductor Robert Harris is excited about the upcoming season and pleased to offer a concert of British, Scottish, and Irish tunes.

"The concert features some very familiar tunes, and some that are new to our group," he said. "What a great way to begin our season; presenting our supporters and music lovers a musical gift from the British Isles.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Generation One, Anderson Cancer Institute and Memorial Behavioral Health will sponsor a talk on breast cancer by Paula C. Denitto, M.D., Oct. 8 from 4:30-5:30 p.m. at Generation One in the Clark Center on Waters Avenue. A discussion group on, "Breast Cancer Treatment - Coping With the Changes" will be held Oct. 22 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at the same site. Call (912) 350 7587 for further information. Interracial Interfaith Community welcomes all

The Interracial Interfaith Community is open to all people of all faiths at its regular meeting the fourth Thursday of every month at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church at Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Anderson St.

Supper ($7) and discussion is from 6:30-8 p.m.

IIC takes an active role in exposing and confronting both personal and institutional racism, is a catalyst for healing and spiritual growth and offers a variety of educational and cultural programs.

Trash or Treasure Day returns to Care 65

Beth Kinstler, owner of Avalon Antiques & Appraisals, will host another Trash or Treasure Day for Care65 on Oct. 17 at 2:30 p.m. in Marsh Auditorium.

Kinstler will provide a quick assessment of an item you bring in - ONE item per person, please! If you have ever wondered if that old candy dish is Depression glass, or if that crystal vase is worth anything, this program is for you.

Kinstler is an accredited appraiser and a member of the International Society of Appraisers, as well as the American Association of Appraisers.

This is a very popular program, and because of limited seating you should register early by calling (912) 352-4405.


Seniors can get help with water bills

Water customers age 65 and older can get a $3 per month discount on their City of Savannah water bill if they are single with an annual income of $9,500 or less, or married with annual income of $15,500 or less. To receive the benefit, apply at Senior Citizens Inc. Call (912) 236-0363, Ext. 125.


Looking for some good senior volunteers

The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) is in need of volunteers to share their time and talents giving back to the communities.

Through RSVP, seniors 55 and older serve in various community organizations, including hospitals, churches, youth recreational centers and educational facilities. Volunteers can serve as few hours or as much as 40 hours per week. RSVP involves seniors in service that matches their personal interests and make use of their skills and lifelong experience. The only qualifications needed are to be at least 55 or older and to have the desire to share with the communities your personal talents.

Happy Geechee reunion

The Happy Geechees will hold their 23rd reunion on Oct. 13 at the Elks Lodge, 183 Wilshire Blvd., in Savannah from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

The group includes those who attended Benedictine, St. Vincent's, Commercial High or Savannah High between 1928 and 1951. The event begins at 10 a.m. with social time and light refreshments; lunch will be served at 1 p.m. and dancing to the George "Mr. Big Band Savannah" Doerner Orchestra will be from 2-5 p.m. SHS-CHS classes of 1941 will be featured as they celebrate their 60th reunion. Community Cardiovascular Council cholesterol screenings

This organization offers cholesterol screenings the first Tuesday of each month. The next screening will be Oct. 2 from 9-11:30 a.m. for $20. This is by appointment only. To make an appointment, call (912) 236-7666. The clinic is at 1900 Abercorn St., between 35th and 36th streets. The clinic is also seeking volunteers to greet and check in patients. Anyone interested in committing a few hours a week should call the number above and ask for Sydney Oetgen.


Alzheimer's caregivers support group meets regularly

The Alzheimer's and Related Disorders Caregivers Support Group meets monthly on the first Monday from 10:30 a.m.-noon at the Skidaway Island United Methodist Church, 54 Diamond Causeway. The free group is for caregivers, loved ones and friends of victims of Alzheimer's and related diseases. Information: (912) 598-8460.


New meeting dates set for polio survivors

If you have few hours a week and like to help others, you may be a perfect fit for Senior Citizens Inc.'s Senior Companion Program.
