Memorial Health lecture series brings Dr. Patch Adams

Dr. Patch Adams, the physician who was portrayed on film by Robin Williams, will return to his comedic roots when he performs "The Magic Elixirs of Life" at 6 p.m. Oct. 12, in the Johnny Mercer Theater of the Savannah Civic Center. His performance is the final event in this year's Memorial Health Lecture Series.

Dr. Adams' groundbreaking work into the relationship between humor and health landed him in Hollywood, with Williams cast as the real-life Patch. Here, Adams performs a Vaudeville wellness show. With partner Susan Parenti at his side, he performs using clowning, tap dance, piano, accordion, and audience participation.

The lecture is free and open to the public, but tickets are required. To obtain tickets, go by the Civic Center Box Office between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays or call 651-6550. For this event, parking at the Civic Center is free but limited.

Fall Festival, garden expert coming up at Bamboo Farm

The annual Pumpkins, Plants & Paraphernalia Fall Festival will be held Oct. 21, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Bamboo Farm & Coastal Gardens in Savannah. Family entertainment will include two shows by Okeefenokee Joe and his native reptiles, cane grinding, a petting zoo, hayrides, pumpkin painting, plant and bamboo sale, and a giant warehouse Garage Sale.

The Plant Lecture Series that weekend will feature Jim Wilson of PBS's "The Victory Garden." Call (912) 921-5460 for full detail or to reserve your seat.

The Bamboo Farm is at Canebrake Road & U.S. 17, 1/2 mile from Keller's Flea Market.

Kickin' up your heels and lookin' fine

The City of Savannah Leisure Services Bureau is hosting ''A Night of Elegance,'' a jazz concert featuring the Teddy Adams Band along with a fashion show. The free seniors event will be held Oct. 10 beginning at 6 p.m. in the Savannah Civic Center Ballroom. For more information, call (912) 251-3855.

The Oglethorpe Mall bookstore will hold its monthly seniors book discussion group Oct. 10, 11 a.m. The group will be hosted by Carol Ratliff and Kay Holiday. The group will discuss this month's book and vote on next month's volume. The group is open to anyone.

Food, dancing captivate visitors to Greek Festival

St. Paul's Greek Orthodox Church will again, for the 49th year, sponsor the city's annual Greek Festival Nov. 19-21 at the Hellenic Center, 14 W. Anderson St.

The three-day festival will include authentic Greek foods and pastries, merchandise, grocery products and live music with Nick Trivelas and the Aegeans.

Two dance groups and church tours are also planned but times had not been finalized.

Hours are 11 a.m.-9 p.m. daily. Admission is free from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. on Thursday and Friday. A $2 donation will be accepted at the door after 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday and all day Saturday. Complete meals will be served each day from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and 5 p.m.-9 p.m. Beverages, pastries and gyro sandwiches will be available at all times.

Magnolia Manor on the Coast to celebrate 10th anniversary with a swing dance and barbecue

The public is invited to celebrate Magnolia Manor on the Coast's 10th anniversary at a big band dance and barbecue Nov. 4.

Festivities start at 11 a.m. with the Richmond Hill High School Choral Group singing patriotic songs, music from the 1940s and religious songs.

At 11:30, Adventure Radio will be broadcasting live from the patio at Magnolia Manor. Red Hot and Blue will begin serving barbecue for all guests.

From 2-5 p.m. Gus "D" Oldie will deejay big band music. The dance is sponsored by Bryan Bank and Trust. Churches providing live music will be Southwest Community Church of Savannah, St. Luke UMC, and Speedwell.

The independent living center in Richmond Hill is located at 141 Timber Trail. Take exit 90 off of I-95 (formerly exit 15) and go east 2.5 miles. Turn right on Timber Trail.

Author, TV host to speak at GSU garden symposium

"Go Wild -- Design and Maintenance of Native Landscapes in the South," an all day symposium featuring author Jim Wilson will be held at Georgia Southern University on Nov. 18. The symposium will be held at the Fielding Russell Union Theatre in the morning, with an afternoon workshop at Georgia Southern Botanical Garden.

Wilson is widely known for his 10 years as co-host of the popular PBS program, the "Victory Garden," and now appears as co-host of classic episodes of the "Great Gardeners" series.

Also scheduled to speak are Meredith Renfroe, curator of the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Trail at Callaway Gardens; Hank Bruno, veteran Trails Manager at Callaway Gardens; and David Knox, certified arborist.

Junior League annual thrift sale Oct. 6-7

For the 53rd year, the Junior League of Savannah is holding its giant thrift sale Oct. 6-7 at the Savannah Civic Center.

Bargains on a variety of items, from sporting goods to kitchen appliances to furniture and toys will be showcased at the civic center as more than 4,000 shoppers scramble to go home with a treasure.

Hours are 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $4 Friday, $2 Saturday -- and all items will be marked off by half. All sales are cash deals!

Proceeds from the sale benefits Junior League projects, which includes a variety of programs for seniors.

Medicare and long term care are subjects of Richmond Hill program

Magnolia Manor on the Coast will host their monthly seminar Oct 5 at 1 p.m. Sonny Rubnitz of Senior Citizen Claims and Services Inc., will present, ''What Every Senior Needs to Know about Medicare and Long Term Care.'' The seminar is free and open to the public.

Irvin ''Sonny'' Rubnitz is a specialist in Medicare supplements and long term care. Rubnitz is the past president of the Savannah Association of Insurance and Financial Advisers and past member of the Savannah Jaycees. He was the chairman and organizer of the March of Dimers Walk-A-Thon in Savannah.

He has been awarded the Underwriter of the Year, by the Savannah Life Underwriters Association; Metropolitan's Georgia Regional Leadership Award and the General Agent and Managers Association of Savannah, Agent of the Year.

Memorial Health holding Depression Screening Day, Oct. 5

Some 68 percent of Americans 65 and older think they know only "a little" or "almost nothing" about the illness of depression, according to the National Mental Health Association. This National Depression Screening Day, October 5, Memorial Health Behavioral Services is offering a free program that will teach older adults about depression and give them the opportunity to test themselves for the illness.

Local seniors can take the first step toward getting help or can just check their emotional health by attending the free, anonymous screenings offered at Memorial Health. For more information or to register, contact Larraine Durden at 350-3075. The screening will consist of a written screening test, an educational presentation and the opportunity to talk individually with a mental health professional. Referrals will be provided to those in need. All screenings are free and anonymous.

Ballroom dancing group hosting anniversary ball at Mighty 8th

The Savannah chapter of the U.S. Amateur Ballroom Dancing Association will have its Anniversary Ball from 8-11 p.m. Oct. 21 at the Mighty 8th Air Force Heritage Museum.

The Gene Fox Group will provide music. The semiformal affair will feature heavy hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar. Tickets are $25 each and can be bought in advance by calling Earl Bacon, (912) 961-6261.

AARP 55-Alive driving classes for October

This is a classroom refresher course for people age 50 and over who know how to drive. There are no tests and no driving -- and everyone who attends both days gets a certificate that will entitle them to a 10 percent reduction in auto insurance premiums.
