Mighty 8th programs will put spotlight on Korea vets
In October, the 165th Airlift Wing will celebrate its rich history, observing its 54th anniversary and the 50th anniversary of its active duty deployment to Korea.
The unit, then the 158th Fighter-Bomber Squadron, was called to active duty in October 1950, in support of the allied fighting units then seeing action throughout the Korean Peninsula. The 158th, along with its support element, the 216th Air Service Group (Detachment C), first reported to George AFB, Calif. After several months of intensive training on the F-84 Fighter-Bomber, the unit moved directly into the theater of operations in Korea for the balance of the war.
On Oct. 14, the 165th will celebrate this historic call to duty and honor the outstanding contributions of these veterans. A ceremony will be held giving distinct honor to those living and deceased veterans of this historic conflict. These decorated veterans will be guests of honor for the unit's open house Saturday morning and dinner later that night at the Mighty 8th Air Force Heritage Museum.
The 165th has been designated to serve as one of the Korean War Commem-orations for its service during the war by the U.S. Transportation Command.
The ceremony will feature First District Congressman Jack Kingston and the Unit's only flying ace, Lt. Col. Philip Coleman (Ret.). Coleman recorded nine flying kills, five during World War II and four in Korea. In addition, the 165th will observe a Change of Command Ceremony for its honorary commanders.
The open house is free and open to the public and will feature numerous types of aircraft on static displays and parachute drops.
Former members of the unit, and particularly Korean War veterans, are encouraged to contact the unit for more information concerning this event. For information, call Col. Ed Wexler at (912) 966-8165, Lt. Col. Rick Poppell at (912) 966-8203, or TSgt. Joyce Vinke at (912) 966-8204. |
