Weekly Caregivers' Support Group

This group, co-sponsored by Hospice Savannah and Jewish Family Services, will meet every Thursday beginning Nov. 9 from 6:30 p.m.-7:45 p.m. at the Jewish Educational Alliance, 5111 Abercorn St.

The support group is free to anyone providing care to a loved one with any chronic or serious illness, whether that loved one receives care at home, in an assisted living facility or in a nursing home. Celebrating fall on the canal

The Savannah-Ogeechee Canal Museum and Nature Center is having its Fall Festival on Nov. 4 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

The fund-aising event helps support this historic and educational landmark.

Events will include: arts/crafts, door prizes, hot dogs/hamburgers, live reptile/amphibian shows at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Community Cardiovascular Council

This organization offers cholesterol screenings the first Tuesday of each month. The next screening will be Nov. 7 from 9-11:30 a.m. for $20. This is by appointment only. To make an appointment, call 236-7666. The clinic is at 1900 Abercorn St., between 35th and 36th streets. The clinic is also seeking volunteers to greet and check in patients. Anyone interested in committing a few hours a week should call the number above and ask for Pat Laughlin.

Veterans saluted in upcoming events

The Veterans Council of Chatham County will hold its annual memorial service at 10:15 a.m. Nov. 10 at Benedictine Military School, 6502 Seawright Drive, Savannah. Speaker will be Herbie Griffin.

The 51st Annual Veterans Day Parade will begin at 10 a.m. Nov. 11 at Abercorn and Gwinnett streets and proceed north on Abercorn to Liberty, west on Liberty to Montgomery, north on Montgomery to Broughton, east on Broughton to its conclusion on East Broad Street. Care65 and Candler Foundation holding estate planning seminar

Several facets of successful estate planning will be covered during this seminar Nov. 9 beginning at 9:30 a.m. in Candler Hospital's Marsh Auditorium.

Bag your bags, but not before you hear these travel tips

Magnolia Manor on the Coast will host a seminar on "Travel Tips for Seniors" on Nov. 2 at 1 p.m.

Presenter Yvette Carr, manager of Burns World Travel at the Airport Office, will talk about money saving tips and popular destinations. Carr will also talk about planning a vacation and the discount opportunities for AARP members at various hotels and resorts.

She will also discuss discount airfares for passengers over 62.

Happy anniversary to Magnolia Manor

The public is invited to celebrate Magnolia Manor on the Coast's 10th anniversary at a big band dance and barbecue Nov. 4.

Festivities begin at 11 a.m. with the Richmond Hill High School Choral Group singing patriotic songs, music from the 1940s and religious songs. At 11:30 a.m., Adventure Radio will be broadcasting live from the patio at Magnolia Manor. Red Hot and Blue will be serving barbecue for all guests.

From 2-5 p.m., Gus "D" Oldie will deejay big band music. The dance is sponsored by Bryan Bank and Trust.

Churches providing live music will be Southwest Community Church of Savannah, St. Luke UMC and Speedwell.

Coastal Jazz Association CD is now available

"Satin Doll," the first recorded collaboration between the Telfair Museum of Art and the Coastal Jazz Association, is now available. The disc, subtitled "The Music of Duke Ellington and Johnny Mercer," was recorded live April 6 and 8 in the Telfair's rotunda. It features Priscilla Albergottie's vocals and the Savannah Jazz Orchestra. Phil Hadaway and Robert Willis were engineers for the recording. The tracks include: "The Days of Wine and Roses," "Tangerine," "Skylark," "Rain Check," "I Remember You," "It Don't Mean a Thing," "Just Squeeze Me," "Take the 'A' Train," "Moon River," "Midnight Sun," "Cotton Tail" and the title track, the only Ellington/Mercer collaboration. "Satin Doll" will be officially released during the First Saturday festival on River Street on Nov. 4.

The Oglethorpe Mall bookstore will hold its monthly seniors book discussion group at 11 a.m. Nov. 14. The group will be hosted by Carol Ratliff and Kay Holiday. The group will discuss this month's book and vote on next month's volume. The group is open to anyone.

Author, TV host to speak at GSU garden symposium

"Go Wild - Design and Maintenance of Native Landscapes in the South," an all-day symposium featuring author Jim Wilson, will be held at Georgia Southern University on Nov. 18. The symposium will be held at the Fielding Russell Union Theatre in the morning, with an afternoon workshop at Georgia Southern Botanical Garden.

Wilson is widely known for his 10 years as co-host of the popular PBS program "Victory Garden" and now appears as co-host of classic episodes of the "Great Gardeners" series.

Also scheduled to speak are Meredith Renfroe, curator of the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Trail at Callaway Gardens; Hank Bruno, veteran Trails Manager at Callaway Gardens; and David Knox, certified arborist.

AARP 55-Alive driving classes for November

This is a classroom refresher course for people age 50 and over who know how to drive. There are no tests and no driving - and everyone who attends both days gets a certificate that will entitle him or her to a 10 percent reduction in auto insurance premiums. Tybee's Carl Looper qualifies for National Senior Games

Carl Looper, senior athlete and organizer of the Tybee Senior Games, won a gold medal in table tennis during the Georgia Senior Games at Robins Air Force Base Sept. 20-23.

More than 600 seniors competed in a range of events. Looper's gold medal qualifies him to participate in the National Senior Games planned for Baton Rouge, La., in June 2000.

The Third Annual Tybee Senior Games will be held in April.
