Two sessions remain in a pair of free college-level workshops open to everyone, from teens to seniors.
The sessions, "Curtain Going Up! Secrets of Drama," is an Introduction to Literature and follows with an examination of character, plot, conflict, theme, setting myth and symbolism as they apply to drama.
The second series, "Explore the Western Tradition - Part 1," examines periods from the Golden Age of Greece, the Renaissance, the Enlightenment and the beginnings of the 20th-century in history, philosophy and art.
Sessions will be held at the Bull Street Branch library, Savannah's Cultural Affairs SPACE facility at 9 West Henry St., and the Islands Community Center.
The workshops combine videos provided by the Anncnberg/CPB Channel with group discussion, and individual library and/or Internet research.
In addition, the Chatham County Public Access Channel (COMCAST 16) will broadcast the Workshop videos Monday and Tuesday of each week from 10 a.m. to noon with a rebroadcast at the same time on Saturday, for those who cannot attend the workshops.
A detailed syllabus will be available at each of the workshop sites.
The Workshops were developed by the Coastal Community Learning Collaborative with the cooperation of Chatham County, Comcast, Goodwill Industries and the Free University Project (www.freeuniv.com). Research librarians at the CEL Regional Library prepared related reference citations for the syllabus.
"It will even be possible to earn college credits, as the workshops cover some of the material included in several proficiency exams, such as the CLEP General Exam in the Humanities, the CLEP Subject Exams in Western Civilization I and IL, and the DANTES exam in Art of the Western World," according to Jack Star, coordinator of the collaborative. "You do not have to be enrolled in college to take these exams.'
More workshops will be offered in the new year. For more information contact Pete Nichols, 652-7923 or Star, 233-4288.
