Union Carbide, Dow retirees will meet
PORT ROYAL - The Beaufort, Hilton Head, Savannah Chapter of the Union Carbide Retiree Corp. will have its winter meeting March 12 at Claude's restaurant in Port Royal.
The luncheon meeting will start at 11:30 a.m. with a cash bar and lunch at 12:30 p.m. Fran Marscher, chairman of the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry, will speak.

'Steel Magnolias' on stage in Bluffton

Domestic violence support group forms
SAVANNAH - SAFE Shelter will host a domestic violence support group meeting every Thursday from noon-1 p.m. beginning March 6 at Senior Citizens Inc., 325 Bull St., Savannah. Center wants to launch senior fishing program
TYBEE ISLAND - Oceanside and Savannah Beach Nursing and Rehabilitation Centers are planning on providing seniors the opportunity to go on a group fishing excursion to either the long pier or the back river pier on Tybee Island once a month. The centers are requesting donations from the community of unused, serviceable fishing equipment. Please drop off your unused fishing equipment and supplies to the receptionist at Oceanside, 77 Van Horn St., Tybee Island, GA 31328.
The centers will also help seniors (over age 65) acquire a free fishing license. A copy of your identification card is required, which you may drop by the above address or mail.

Parkinson's support group to meet
SAVANNAH - Parkinson's Support Group will meet March 6 at 5 p.m. at Candler Hospital, Marsh Auditorium. Mary M. Hulihan, research coordinator, Mayo Clinic, Jacksonville, and Matthew J. Farrer, senior associate consultant, Mayo Clinic, Jacksonville, and assistant professor of neuroscience at Mayo Medical School, will speak on "The Genetics of Parkinsonism."

GREAT AMERICAN COVER-UP QUILT SHOW
ROSWELL - This is the 21st annual quilt show will be held at the 1840 house museum Bulloch Hall, 180 Bulloch Ave., Roswell, Ga., March 8-16. More than 200 quilts will be displayed on all four floors. This year's theme is "Bear Necessities: A 100 Years of Comfort," in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Teddy bear. There will be daily demonstrations, quilting at the frame, special exhibits and a gift shop. Monday-Saturday 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Sunday 1-4 p.m. Adults $6, Children (6-12) $4.
Ballroom dance lessons planned
SAVANNAH - The Moon River Dancers invite you to join them at The West Board Street YMCA, 1110 May Street, for basic ballroom dance lessons March 1 from 1-3 p.m. The goal of the classes is to provide basic instruction to beginners so they will feel comfortable coming to the chapter's monthly dance. Each class will take place one week before the monthly USABDA dance, and will give instruction to the dance lesson that will be featured that month, plus the previous month. This class lessons will be the Swing and the Tango.
The cost is $3 per person.

Ballroom dance at Island YMCA
The Moon River Dancers invite you to join them March 8, 7-10:30 p.m., at The Island YMCA located at 66 Johnny Mercer Blvd. for an evening of dance, music and socializing. DJ Music will be provided. This casual affair will provide an atmosphere of good clean fun.

Group will stage 'Blithe Spirit'
SUN CITY - "Blithe Spirit," a three-act farce by Noel Coward, will be presented this month by members of the Sun City Community Theater.

Mental illness group meets regularly
SAVANNAH - The Savannah Chapter of the National Association for the Mentally Ill meets from 4-6 p.m. the third Sunday of each month in room 226 of the Armstrong Atlantic Southern University Sports Education Building. Open to anyone affected by mental illness or who is caretaker for someone suffering from mental illness, the meeting usually has a guest speaker.

Looking for some good senior volunteers
SAVANNAH - The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) is in need of volunteers to share their time and talents giving back to the communities.
Through RSVP, seniors 55 and older serve in various community organizations, including hospitals, churches, youth recreational centers and educational facilities. Volunteers can serve as few hours or as much as 40 hours per week. RSVP involves seniors in service that matches their personal interests and make use of their skills and lifelong experience. The only qualifications needed are to be at least 55 or older and to have the desire to share with the communities your personal talents.

Alzheimer's support group meeting
SAVANNAH - Communication difficulties due to the deterioration of memory functions causes many people to avoid visiting Alzheimer patients. During the March 3 meeting, the support group will discuss some ideas for visiting and communicating with people who have memory losses. Videos entitled "Meeting Daily Challenges" and "Managing Difficult Behaviors" will also be available to view in March. On April 7, Nancy Sheets, a retired nursing administrator, will lead a discussion on stress management.
The Alzheimer's and Related Disorders Caregivers Support Group meets monthly on the first Monday and third Tuesday from 10:30 a.m.-noon at the Skidaway Island United Methodist Church, 54 Diamond Causeway.
A resource library of articles, books and videos on Alzheimer 's disease is available at the church.
