Itching for some fun? Try the seventh anniversary of FFFM

Folk Music Society birthday show will feature some things old, some things new.

This will be the 84th month in a row that the Savannah Folk Music Society has presented its coffeehouse-style concert, "First Friday for Folk Music." To celebrate the seven-year anniversary, "First Friday" will offer its usual menu of diverse, top-notch acoustic music along with door prizes and a few other surprises. The entertainment includes Hank Weisman and John Powers, also known as "The Old Folkers," the gifted songwriter, singer and finger-style guitarist Darryl Wise, and the ever-popular and talented couple, Bob and Judy Williams.

The June 6 anniversary-edition of First Friday will be at the Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church, 429 Abercorn St. on Calhoun Square. Music will be from 8-11 p.m.

As "The Old Folkers," Hank Weisman and John Powers usually open and close the First Friday shows. On this occasion, however, Weisman and Powers offer up a full 50-minute set of music, including their classics as well as some new songs. The Old Folkers draw much material from traditional sources and the folk revival era of the 1950s and 1960s.

The "new" feature of this First Friday program is Darryl Wise making his First Friday debut. Wise was reared in the Savannah area, but developed much of his musical craft while in St. Augustine, Fla. It was there he got to know and learn from his mentor, Gamble Rogers, Florida's greatest folksinger. Darryl returned to settle on Tybee Island and is quickly earning a well-deserved reputation as one of the area's finest songwriters, performers and guitarists.

If something is "old" at this celebration, it's the appearance of Bob and Judy Williams. By old, we don't mean stale or redundant! Bob and Judy played at the very first "First Friday for Folk Music" and have taken the stage many times since, including most anniversary shows. They are familiar and comfortable for us, while always giving us new material and displaying a wealth of talent as singers and musicians. It just wouldn't be an anniversary without them!

The Savannah Folk Music Society's "First Friday for Folk Music" has established itself as a Savannah tradition. A loyal following of 150-200 attentive and enthusiastic fans of all ages arrive month after month. Thanks to many who help out, these fans are treated to consistently fine entertainment, a welcoming atmosphere, homemade baked goods and a great deal of fun. There is a recommended donation of $2 per person. Refreshments are available for purchase.
