Get a free fan

Senior Citizens Inc. is holding a fan giveaway program for seniors over the age of 55 who are without effective household cooling measures. Fans are free and can be picked up at Senior Citizens Inc., located at 3025 Bull St. Community partners who have donated fans include Savannah Electric and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, as well as several private individuals. Coastal Empire and Lowcountry Dance Club

This social group offers free shag lessons each Monday night at The Holiday Inn/Midtown in Mulligan's, 7100 Abercorn St., from 7-8 p.m. Membership is not necessary and no partner is required. There is no cover charge, happy hour extends until 9 p.m. and there is a free buffet beginning at 8 p.m.

Plus, the group has a special event upcoming.

"Dance to the Music," is a fund-raiser set for July 19-21 at the Comfort Inn in Pooler. Tickets will be $44.99 - there is a one-day ticket also available. Pfizer Share card available at Senior Citizens Inc.

Pfizer Pharmaceuticals is offering a Share Card program to help seniors save money on prescription drugs. The Share Card can be used at the local pharmacy, when seniors fill a Pfizer prescription. With the card, Pfizer prescriptions cost only $15 for up to a 30-day supply of medicine. Senior Citizens Inc. will serve as one of the sites for distributing applications and assisting seniors with filling out the appropriate form.

To qualify, seniors must be enrolled in Medicare, have no prescription drug coverage, and have a gross income of less than $18,000 per year single income or less than $24,000 annual income if married.

"As more prescription drug assistance is made available through other pharmaceutical companies, we will let seniors know about their programs," said Patti Lyons, president of Senior Citizens Inc.

Current MedBank clients should contact MedBank for assistance with this program. The card covers many Pfizer medicines such as Glucotrol, Lipitor, Zithromax and Zyrtec.


BRIDGE CLUB MEETS AT THE JEA

Community Cardiovascular Council cholesterol screenings

This organization offers cholesterol screenings the first Tuesday of each month, from 9-11:30 a.m., for $20. This is by appointment only. To make an appointment, call (912) 236-7666. The clinic is at 1900 Abercorn St., between 35th and 36th streets. The clinic is also seeking volunteers to greet and check in patients. Anyone interested in committing a few hours a week should call the number above and ask for Sydney Oetgen.


Interracial Interfaith Community welcomes all

The Interracial Interfaith Community is open to all people of all faiths at its regular meeting the fourth Thursday of every month at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church at Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Anderson St.

Supper ($7) and discussion is from 6:30-8 p.m.

IIC takes an active role in exposing and confronting both personal and institutional racism, is a catalyst for healing and spiritual growth and offers a variety of educational and cultural programs.

Recent programs include Parent University, Can We Talk? Conferences, Friends Puppet Show and the Anti-Racism Conference at the Universalist Church.

Seniors can get help with water bills

Water customers age 65 and older can get a $3 per month discount on their City of Savannah water bill if they are single with an annual income of $9,500 or less, or married with annual income of $15,500 or less. To receive the benefit, apply at Senior Citizens Inc. Call (912) 236-0363, Ext. 125.


Looking for some good senior volunteers

The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) is in need of volunteers to share their time and talents giving back to the communities.

Through RSVP, seniors 55 and older serve in various community organizations, including hospitals, churches, youth recreational centers and educational facilities. Volunteers can serve as few hours or as much as 40 hours per week. RSVP involves seniors in service that matches their personal interests and make use of their skills and lifelong experience. The only qualifications needed are to be at least 55 or older and to have the desire to share with the communities your personal talents.

Alzheimer's caregivers support group meets regularly

The Alzheimer's and Related Disorders Caregivers Support Group meets monthly on the first Monday from 10:30 a.m.-noon at the Skidaway Island United Methodist Church, 54 Diamond Causeway.

A resource library of articles, books and videos on Alzheimer's Disease is available at the church.

The free group is for caregivers, loved ones and friends of victims of Alzheimer's and related diseases. Information: (912) 598-9905 or (912) 598-8516.


Speech and hearing center seeks volunteers

The Savannah Speech and Hearing Center needs volunteers to conduct hearing screenings on children and adults and nurses or retired nurses to do eye, ear and dental exams on preschool children. Seniors looking for companions

If you have few hours a week and like to help others, you may be a perfect fit for Senior Citizens Inc.'s Senior Companion Program. Magnolia Manor receives grant from Electric Coop Foundation

Magnolia Manor on the Coast received a $2500 grant from The Coastal Electric Cooperative Foundation, which will be used for a new van.

Presenting the check was Bob Caldwell, chairman of The Coastal Electric Cooperative Foundation, and board member Bobby Carpenter.

The grant supplements funds already raised by Magnolia Manor's "Flavor of Coastal Living Festival" in April, which was a fund-raiser for the new bus. Local restaurants gave away samples and there were live historical demonstrations that took place on the grounds.
