SAVANNAH - Coastal Pet Rescue invites the public to celebrate its second anniversary with the "Spare the Pets" bowl-a-thon Feb. 5 from 6-8 p.m. at AMF Savannah Lanes on Tibet Ave. Individuals-$20, 6-person teams-$120. Spend a cool night at the Beach
SAVANNAH - Jan. 11 the Beach Institute will present the third installment of the Cool Nights at the Beach series. The series showcases African and African-inspired performances by artists with ties to Savannah. This month's presentations will feature spoken word performances by the Spitfire Poetry Group and Project Yes, vocalists Juanita Tucker and Adiva, as well as folklorist and storyteller Sister Imani Mtendaji.

50 artists display floral works
HILTON HEAD - The Hilton Head Community Library will host an exhibit of floral art from more than 50 local artists Jan. 4-Feb. 12. Sales of the works will benefit local charities. A reception announcing the winners will be held Jan. 11, 5-7 p.m.
The winning art will be auctioned at the Garden Tour's premier party in May. Non winning art will be available for purchase. Proceeds from the Garden Tour, May 21 will go to LowCountry Legal Aid, Inc., Children's Relief Fund, Literacy Volunteers of the Lowcountry and All Saints Pre-School.

Brad Trower, orthopedic clinical initiative manager, and Karen Crisler, manager of physical therapy and orthopedics at St. Joseph's/Candler will discuss, "The Basics of Orthopedics and How to Choose the Best Orthopedist for You." Trower received his bachelor's degree in health sciences from Georgia Southern University and is a certified athletic trainer. He was previously director of sports medicine at St. Joseph's/Candler. Crisler received her bachelor's degree in physical therapy from the Medical College of Georgia and has worked as a therapist at the National Orthopedic Hospital in Washington, D.C., and at the Marietta Orthopedic Hospital in Atlanta.

SAVANNAH - Elderhostel will present "A Natural History Of Georgia's Coastal Islands," Feb. 6-11 for anyone 55 or older. This Active Outdoor Elderhostel course held on Skidaway Island includes a boat trip to one of Georgia's Golden Isles. SAVANNAH - Volunteers in the facility help with administrative tasks such as receptionist/answering phones, copying, filing, assisting the office manager and making crafts. Community blood drive volunteers needed
BEAUFORT - Lowcountry Community Blood Center, the sole provider of blood for Beaufort Memorial Hospital, is seeking part-time volunteers to assist with donor recruitment for community blood drives.
At least two volunteers are needed to work one day per week, for a few hours each day. Volunteers will work in their own office, located in the pathology department at Beaufort Memorial Hospital. Training will be provided. Days and hours are flexible.

SAVANNAH - The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program is in need of volunteers to share their time and talents giving back to the communities. Through RSVP, seniors 55 and older serve in various community organizations, including hospitals, churches, youth recreational centers and educational facilities. CASA needs volunteers to advocate for abused children
SAVANNAH - Every child should have a safe, loving, and permanent home, but many do not. Each year hundreds of children in Chatham County are abused and neglected by those who are supposed to care for them. The Savannah/Chatham County Court Appointed Special Advocates program is a catalyst for change, but they need your help. Hospice Thrift Shop
HILTON HEAD - Hospice Care of the Lowcountry, a nonprofit organization, has opened a thrift shop in buildings 3 and 4 in Mathew's Court, across from Port Royal Plaza and Sam's Club, on Mathews Drive.
The new shop is called Hospice Community Thrift and is open from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.
A lady's clothing shop is in building 4, and housewares, furniture, books and, men's and children's clothing are in building 3.
Hospice Care of the Lowcountry and other nonprofit charities in the Hilton Head Island and Bluffton areas will receive the proceeds.

HILTON HEAD - The Emotions Anonymous chapter on Hilton Head Island meets at 7:30 a.m. for an hour every Thursday at St. Luke's Parish Hall, Pope Avenue. People can join the program at any time. There are no dues.
Emotions Anonymous offers a 12-step program to help people cope with stress. Members attend for various reasons, including depression, anxiety, relationship problems and other emotional difficulties.

BLUFFTON - The Bluffton Toastmasters chapter currently has 18 members and needs a total of 20 to be officially chartered by Toastmasters International. The name of the soon-to-be-chartered local club is Bluffton Speech Achievers Toastmasters Club. It meets at 7:45 a.m. every Monday at the Palmetto Electric building on U.S. 278 across from the new University of South Carolina New River campus.
