Savannah Folk Music Society's concert features Justin Beckler and others
The Savannah Folk Music Society's First Friday for Folk Music January concert will feature singer and songwriter Justin Beckler, the Savannah Irish Session and FOCCOROPO.
Beckler has recorded two CD's of edgy original music characterized by passionate and unique lyrics. He describes his latest, "Wake Up Process," released earlier this year, as "Acoustic rock with a Peter Gabriel influence."
His live performances, marked by a high level of performance energy leave a lasting memory for all who attend.
"I always put out everything I have when I play," he said. "It's going to be interesting. I'm not just standing up there with my guitar. I really believe in what I'm doing."
The Savannah Irish Session is the brainchild of The Folk Traditions Store-owner, David Dirlam. The band, whose instruments include the traditional Celtic instruments of fiddle, flute, whistle, harp, guitar, dulcimer and bodhran is made up of a group of enthusiastic musicians from the Savannah area, will play traditional dance tunes and Celtic story songs.
FOCOROPO is a First Friday regular. The band members, Leigh Harris, Al Harris, Mary Jo Adams and John Powers, blend their voices along with guitars, harmonica, dobro, bass and mandolin while performing a memorable song list of folk, country, rock and pop music.
First Friday for Folk Music concerts are held the first Fri. of each month at the Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church, 429 Abercorn St. on Calhoun Square. The concerts are smoke-free, alcohol-free and family-friendly. There is a recommended donation of $2 per person. Beverages and homemade fresh baked goods are available for purchase.
