First free summer college to offer classes in July

An orientation meeting for the first free summer college in Savannah is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. April 3, at the Bull Street Branch Library.

"We are offering five courses in July: Western Civilization I & 2, American History I & 2, and Introductory Psychology. Students can earn up to 1.5 units credit," said Jack Star, coordinator of the Coastal Community Learning collaborative which is sponsoring the college.

Each course will be held three days a week for four weeks starting the week of July 9.

"The courses will prepare students to take proficiency exams (CLEP tests) which arc accepted for credit in over 2800 colleges and universities across the country," says Star.

An extension of the College to You initiative sponsored by the Collaborative, courses will combine telecourse-quality videos and class discussion with Internet and library assignments.

The college is open to all, whether or not they are interested in obtaining college credit.

"We encourage attendance by high school juniors and seniors, currently enrolled college students, non-traditional students, and adult learners." says Star. Students may enroll in as many as all five courses.

"High school students can benefit directly, by taking the CLEP tests, or indirectly, by improving grades in regular or Advanced Placement classes. College students can reduce costs of tuition, improve grades, save time, and gain greater flexibility in scheduling regular classes," he said.

Students can work at their own pace and take the CLEP test when they feel they are ready. Fees for each CLEP test are less than $60 and are administered at local colleges. Colleges typically grant 3 units for successful completion of each test.

The orientation session April 3 will introduce students to the CLEP program and demonstrate how the classes will be conducted. Additional information is available from Star at (912) 233-4288. or on the website www.gocollegetoyou.org Members of the Coastal Community Learning Collaborative include: Chatharn County, Goodwill Industries, COMCAST and the Free University Project (www. fteeuniv.com).
