College to You offers four video presentations for poetry month
April is Poetry Month and, to help celebrate it, four video presentations are scheduled on Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. in the Bull Street Branch Library, starting April 10.
The series, titled "Poets of Change," is free and open to the public. It features video portraits of four poets whose work profoundly changed the nature of American poetry.
The series begins April 10 with Walt Whitman, whose "Leaves of Grass" transformed 19th century poetry. Next, on April 17, the series continues with a look at the reclusive Emily Dickenson, whose intellectually challenging poetry was not seriously acknowledged until after her death. Following, on April 24, there will be a video biography of T.S Eliot, whose poetry stimulated great controversy. Robert Lowell, whose confessional style influenced many contemporary poets, closes the series May 1.
The videos are from the Voices & Visions series provided by the Annenherg/CPB Project. A discussion will follow each presentation. For more information contact Jack Star at 233-4288, or visit the website www.gocollegetoyou.org. The series, co-sponsored by the CEL Regional Library, is a part of the College to You initiative of the Coastal Community Learning Collaborative. Members of the Collaborative include Chathatn County, COMCAST, Goodwill Industries, and the Free University Project (www. freeuniv. com).
